Adult Safeguarding Awareness

Safeguarding adults is a fundamental responsibility for everyone working in health and social care. Every adult has the right to live free from abuse, neglect, discrimination and exploitation, while being treated with dignity, respect and compassion. Recognising concerns early and taking appropriate action helps protect individuals from harm and promotes safer care environments.

This awareness-level course provides a practical introduction to adult safeguarding within UK health and social care settings. Learners will develop an understanding of safeguarding legislation, national guidance, the different types of abuse and neglect, recognising indicators of harm, responding appropriately to disclosures, and understanding their legal and professional responsibilities for raising concerns.

The course explains the principles of person-centred safeguarding, the importance of Making Safeguarding Personal (MSP), maintaining confidentiality appropriately, accurate factual record keeping, effective communication, and the importance of working in partnership with colleagues, safeguarding leads, local authorities and other agencies where necessary.

Through realistic workplace scenarios, learners will explore how safeguarding situations may arise in residential care, nursing homes, supported living, domiciliary care and healthcare environments. The course reinforces the importance of professional curiosity, timely reporting, safeguarding culture, and ensuring that adults are supported to make informed decisions wherever possible.

This course is designed for awareness only. It does not qualify learners to undertake safeguarding investigations, determine whether abuse has occurred, conduct formal enquiries under the Care Act 2014, or make statutory safeguarding decisions. These responsibilities remain with appropriately authorised organisations and professionals.
