Aim of the Course

The course aims to strengthen safe, person-centred medication practice and help learners identify risks, respond appropriately to changes or discrepancies, maintain reliable records and work effectively with prescribers, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.

Scope of the Course

The course covers advanced medication practice within care homes and comparable adult social care settings in England. It addresses medicines reconciliation, complex administration, high-risk medicines, controlled drugs, PRN medicines, covert administration, medication review, incident management and quality assurance.

Completion does not authorise a learner to prescribe, alter, crush, discontinue or administer medicines beyond their professional scope, assessed competence, workplace policy or formal delegation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

1. Explain their responsibilities and professional limitations when managing medicines.
2. Apply person-centred principles when supporting individuals with medication.
3. Identify discrepancies during medicines reconciliation and escalate them appropriately.
4. Recognise higher-risk and time-critical medicines requiring additional safeguards.
5. Interpret PRN instructions and assess whether safe administration criteria have been met.
6. Describe the controls required for receiving, storing, administering and recording controlled drugs.
7. Explain the legal safeguards required for covert administration.
8. Recognise adverse effects, omissions, medication errors and signs of clinical deterioration.
9. Complete medication records accurately and maintain a clear audit trail.
10. Take appropriate immediate action following a medication incident or near miss.
11. Explain when formal delegation, competency assessment and clinical supervision are required.
12. Use audit findings and incident learning to support improvements in medication practice.
