Aim of the Course

This course aims to develop nurses’ understanding of clinical governance and their practical responsibilities for delivering, monitoring and improving safe, effective, person-centred care.

It enables learners to recognise weaknesses in care systems, use quality and safety information appropriately, participate in audits and improvement activity, respond professionally to incidents and concerns, and contribute to an open learning culture.

Scope of the Course

This course is suitable for:

1. Registered nurses
2. Nursing associates working within their scope
3. Care-home and nursing-home nurses
4. Hospital and community nurses
5. Primary-care nurses
6. Mental health and learning-disability nurses
7. Clinical team leaders and charge nurses
8. Practice supervisors and assessors

10. Nurses preparing for leadership responsibilities
11. Nurses involved in audit, quality assurance or service improvement

The regulatory content primarily concerns services operating in England. The professional principles of accountability, safety, evidence-based care and continuous improvement remain relevant across UK nursing practice, but regulatory structures differ between the four UK nations.

Course completion does not independently authorise a learner to:

1. Act as a registered manager
2. Lead a formal patient-safety investigation
3. approve organisational policies
4. Undertake specialist clinical audit without appropriate support
5. Make employment or disciplinary decisions
6. Process confidential information without an appropriate legal basis
7. Provide legal or regulatory advice
8. Perform tasks beyond their professional competence
9. Replace local induction, supervision or competency assessment

Nurses must work within the NMC Code, applicable legislation, organisational policy, professional competence and local governance arrangements.
