Aim of the Course

This course aims to help health and social care workers understand their responsibilities when delegating, accepting or completing tasks.

It develops the knowledge needed to make safe decisions, communicate instructions clearly, recognise the limits of competence and escalate concerns before avoidable harm occurs.

Scope of the Course

The course is suitable for healthcare assistants, care assistants, support workers, senior carers, team leaders, nurses and other staff involved in allocating, delegating, supervising or receiving care-related tasks.

It covers routine work allocation and delegated healthcare activities within adult health and social care in England.

Completion provides awareness only. It does not authorise a learner to perform a clinical or care activity, replace workplace training or demonstrate practical competence. Any task-specific competency must be taught, assessed, documented and reviewed through an appropriate workplace process.

6. Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

1. Define delegation, responsibility, authority and accountability.
2. Distinguish task allocation from a delegated healthcare activity.
3. Describe the responsibilities of the delegator and the person accepting the task.
4. Explain why accountability for personal actions and omissions remains with each worker.
5. Identify factors that determine whether a task is suitable for delegation.
6. Recognise when a task falls outside their role, competence or current authorisation.
7. Confirm that appropriate training, competency assessment and support are in place.
8. Check that instructions, expected outcomes and escalation arrangements are clear.
9. Explain the importance of involving the person and obtaining valid consent.
10. Identify when supervision or reassessment is required.
11. Refuse, pause or escalate a task that cannot be completed safely.
12. Record delegated care and its outcomes accurately.
13. Respond appropriately to changes, errors, incidents and concerns.
14. Apply safe delegation principles to common frontline care scenarios.
