First Aid

This course introduces the knowledge needed to recognise common adult first-aid emergencies and understand appropriate immediate action. It covers assessing an emergency, obtaining help and responding to sudden illness or injury in health and social care settings. Learners will explore their responsibilities, the limits of their role and how to support a person until further help takes over.

Course Information

1. Delivery: Online, self-paced learning.
2. Focus: Adult first-aid awareness in health and social care.
3. Structure: Ten learning modules followed by a final assessment.
4. Knowledge checks: Two questions within each learning module.
5. Final assessment: Twelve questions based on the course content.
6. Completion: Complete all learning modules and pass the final assessment.
7. Practical assessment: Not included in this online course.

Course Aim

To develop learners’ understanding of how to recognise adult first-aid emergencies, obtain appropriate help and provide immediate assistance within their training and role.

Course Objectives

This course will:

1. Explain first-aid responsibilities, consent and workplace preparation.
2. Introduce a structured approach to assessing an emergency and obtaining help.
3. Explain immediate responses to unresponsiveness, cardiac arrest and choking.
4. Cover first-aid principles for bleeding, injuries and common sudden illnesses.
5. Explain monitoring, handover, recording and actions following an incident.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

1. Identify the responsibilities and limitations of your role when providing first aid.
2. Recognise immediate hazards and select appropriate steps for obtaining emergency help.
3. Distinguish between an unresponsive adult who is breathing normally and someone who may require CPR.
4. Describe the main actions involved in adult CPR, AED use and responding to choking.
5. Select appropriate initial responses to bleeding, burns, injuries and harmful exposures.
6. Recognise common medical emergencies and identify appropriate immediate assistance.
7. Identify the information needed for effective handover and factual incident recording.

Who This Course Is For

This course is intended for care workers, healthcare assistants, support workers and other staff working with adults in care homes, domiciliary care, supported living and related health and social care services. It is suitable for new starters developing first-aid awareness and existing staff refreshing their underpinning knowledge.

Course Scope and Limitations

This course covers adult first-aid awareness. It does not include paediatric first aid, advanced resuscitation or specialist rescue procedures.

Online completion demonstrates knowledge assessed through questions; it does not demonstrate practical competence or qualify you as an Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work first aider. Practical skills require appropriate training and assessment.

Follow your workplace emergency arrangements and act within your training and competence. In an emergency, obtain help promptly and follow instructions from the emergency services.
