Course Description

Develop your understanding of learning disability and the individual support people may need in adult health and social care. This course explores accessible communication, everyday choice, coordinated support and recognition of overlooked needs. Practical examples help you identify appropriate actions, recognise the limits of your role and understand when further support is required.

Training Overview

This course introduces the knowledge needed to support adults with a learning disability respectfully and safely. You will explore communication, independence, individual support plans, healthcare access and responses to distress or concerns. Learning activities and assessments help you apply this knowledge to everyday care and support situations.

What Is a Learning Disability?

A learning disability affects a person’s intellectual functioning and everyday adaptive skills, with difficulties beginning during the developmental period. It is lifelong, but people can continue to learn and develop. The type and amount of support needed differ between individuals.

Course Information

1. Level: Awareness.
2. Delivery: Self-paced online learning.
3. Focus: Supporting adults with a learning disability.
4. Structure: Eight learning modules followed by a final assessment.
5. Learning activities: Interactive components, practical examples, two short videos and two knowledge checks in each learning module.
6. Legal context: Primarily England, with the geographical application of relevant legislation identified within the course.

Course Aim

To help learners recognise and respond to the individual needs of adults with a learning disability through respectful communication, appropriate everyday support and timely action when concerns arise.

Course Objectives

The course will:

1. Introduce learning disability, individual variation and the purpose of diagnosis.
2. Explore accessible communication and support for everyday choices.
3. Explain how individual plans and coordinated working guide support.
4. Examine barriers to healthcare and recognition of overlooked health needs.
5. Introduce support considerations for profound and multiple learning disabilities.
6. Explore distress, positive support and accessible ways to raise concerns.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

1. Explain what learning disability means and distinguish it from learning difficulties and autism.
2. Identify ways to adapt communication and respond when communication remains unsuccessful.
3. Select approaches that support consent, preferences and independence, including when others disagree with the person’s wishes.
4. Explain how to use individual support plans and recognise when review or specialist input is needed.
5. Recognise changes from a person’s usual health and barriers that may prevent appropriate healthcare.
6. Identify considerations specific to supporting someone with profound and multiple learning disabilities.
7. Select appropriate responses to distress within your role and the person’s agreed support arrangements.
8. Recognise possible harm, support the person to express concerns and report factual information through appropriate routes.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is intended for care workers, support workers, healthcare assistants, agency staff and other workers who support or interact with adults with a learning disability.

It is relevant to care homes, supported living, domiciliary care and adult healthcare services. Nurses, nursing associates and team leaders may also use it as an awareness refresher.

Scope and Boundaries

The course focuses on learning-disability-related understanding and everyday support. It includes essential connections to consent, rights, health and safeguarding where these are needed to understand the person’s situation.

Detailed autism education, mental health conditions and treatments, and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards procedures are outside its scope. It does not provide diagnostic training, practical clinical instruction or training in restrictive interventions.

This is a standalone Learning Disability Awareness course. It is not The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism and does not, by itself, establish that an employer has met the full statutory training requirement.

Course Completion

Successful completion requires completion of the learning activities and a pass in the final assessment. This demonstrates awareness-level knowledge of the topics covered; it does not establish practical competence or authorise work beyond your role.

Continue to follow individual support plans, workplace procedures and any role-specific training and supervision requirements.
