This Clarivive MedInsight online awareness course introduces learners to the core principles of safe medication administration and medicines support in UK health and social care settings. The course is designed to support staff awareness, safer practice, reporting culture and professional boundaries. It does not replace workplace medication competency assessment, employer authorisation, supervised practice or local medicines policy.

Learners will explore the medication process from ordering, receiving and storing medicines through to administration checks, MAR/eMAR documentation, refusal, consent, capacity, covert medication awareness, controlled drugs awareness, medication errors, near misses and escalation. The course uses practical examples, realistic care scenarios and knowledge checks to help learners recognise risk and understand when to stop, report and seek advice.

Course purpose

The purpose of this course is to give learners a safe awareness-level understanding of medication administration and medicines support. It helps staff understand why medication safety matters, what can go wrong, how to recognise warning signs, and why they must follow prescriptions, MAR/eMAR records, care plans, local procedures and workplace policy.

This course is not designed to make a learner competent to administer medicines independently. Any staff member expected to administer or support medicines must also receive employer-approved practical training, supervision where required, local policy induction and workplace competency assessment.

Who should not rely on this course alone?

This course alone is not enough for anyone expected to administer medicines independently. Staff must not use this course as proof of medication administration competence. Employers remain responsible for ensuring staff are trained,

authorised, supervised where required, and assessed as competent according to local medicines policy and the learner’s role.

This course does not teach prescribing, advanced pharmacology, clinical decision-making, injectable medication competency, controlled drug accountable officer duties, covert medication decision-making authority or specialist administration routes unless separately trained and authorised.

Estimated completion time

The estimated completion time for this online course is approximately 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the learner’s reading speed, prior knowledge and time spent completing knowledge checks and the final assessment.

Learning outcomes

Learners will understand that medication safety is not only about giving medicines. It also includes checking identity, prescription instructions, MAR/eMAR records, consent, allergies, storage, timing, route, dose, refusals, omissions, side effects, reporting and professional accountability.

On successful completion, learners should understand their role boundaries and know that online awareness training must be supported by local medicines policy, employer authorisation, supervised practice and workplace competency assessment before any independent medication administration duties are undertaken.

Assessment and certificate

Learners will complete knowledge checks throughout the course and a final assessment at the end. The suggested pass mark is 80%, with two attempts allowed.

After successful completion, learners may receive a certificate confirming completion of awareness-level medication administration training. The certificate should not be interpreted as proof of workplace medication administration competence.
