Aim of the Course

This course aims to help health and social care staff recognise early and advanced signs of respiratory deterioration, undertake observations within their competence and escalate concerns without avoidable delay.

It develops a structured approach to assessment, communication, documentation and emergency response while emphasising the importance of knowing the person’s baseline condition and prescribed treatment plan.

Scope of the Course

This course is suitable for:

1. Healthcare assistants and care assistants
2. Support workers
3. Senior carers and team leaders
4. Nursing associates
5. Registered nurses
6. Staff supporting adults with respiratory conditions
7. Managers responsible for clinical-care arrangements

It is primarily intended for adult care homes, supported living, community services and comparable health and social care settings in England.

Course completion does not independently establish competence to undertake clinical observations, calculate NEWS2, administer oxygen, manage respiratory equipment or provide emergency treatment.

Learners must receive role-appropriate practical training, equipment instruction, competency assessment and continuing supervision. They must follow the person-specific care plan, prescribed oxygen target, local escalation pathway and organisational emergency procedures.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

2. Describe the basic principles of breathing and gas exchange.
3. Identify common causes of worsening respiratory function.
4. Establish the importance of knowing the person’s baseline.
5. Recognise early, soft and advanced signs of deterioration.
6. Measure respiratory rate accurately when trained and authorised.
7. Identify increased work of breathing and respiratory exhaustion.
8. Recognise abnormal respiratory sounds requiring escalation.
9. Use pulse oximetry safely within their competence.
