Aim of the Course

This course aims to help supervisors and staff participate in fair, constructive and person-centred supervision and appraisal.

It develops the skills needed to prepare for meetings, discuss performance honestly, agree achievable actions, maintain confidentiality and follow up identified concerns.

Scope of the Course

The course is suitable for senior carers, team leaders, nurses, aspiring supervisors and frontline care workers participating in supervision or appraisal.

It provides practical awareness for adult health and social care services in England. It does not replace an organisation’s supervision, appraisal, capability, disciplinary, safeguarding or human-resources procedures.

6. Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

1. Define supervision and appraisal.
2. Distinguish supervision, appraisal and informal workplace conversations.
3. Explain why effective supervision supports safe, person-centred care.
4. Describe the responsibilities of supervisors and supervisees.
5. Prepare appropriately for supervision and appraisal meetings.
6. Use active listening, open questions and constructive feedback.
7. Reflect on performance using relevant and objective evidence.
8. Recognise competence, conduct, wellbeing and development concerns.
9. Discuss poor practice without using blame, humiliation or discrimination.
10. Identify when concerns require immediate action or formal escalation.
11. Consider equality, inclusion and reasonable workplace adjustments.
12. Agree clear, achievable and measurable objectives.
13. Produce accurate, respectful and appropriately confidential records.
